San Diego ADUs

A complete home, in compact form.

An accessory dwelling unit is a fully independent home — kitchen, bath, and living space — on the same lot as your house. San Diego has long been one of the friendlier places in California to build one, and we help you make the most of it, navigating the current city requirements as part of the design.

Smart design makes a small footprint live large: a real kitchen, a comfortable bath, and light-filled living space that feels like a true home, never an afterthought.

Why build an ADU

One small build, several big returns.

Few projects change what a property can do for a family the way an ADU does.

01

Rental Potential

Strong rental demand across San Diego makes a well-designed ADU a meaningful source of monthly income — a small building that keeps working for you.

02

Multigenerational Living

Keep family close while preserving everyone’s independence — a private, dignified space for parents, adult children, or long-stay guests.

03

Long-Term Value

Adding permitted, livable square footage — and a second dwelling — is one of the most reliable ways to grow what your property can do.

04

Flexible Space

Today a home office, tomorrow a guest suite, later a rental. Few investments adapt to a changing household the way an ADU does.

From sketch to keys

One team handles everything.

An ADU is a whole house in miniature — design, approvals, utilities, and construction. We carry all of it as a single, organized project.

  1. 01

    Site & Design

We study your lot, setbacks, and goals, then design an ADU that maximizes usable space and natural light while complementing the main home.

  2. 02

    Plans & Approvals

ADU requirements evolve, so we help you navigate the current city and state rules for your specific property — and prepare plans that can move forward smoothly.

  3. 03

    Utilities & Systems

Water, sewer, electrical, and heating are planned properly from the start — whether the unit shares services with the main house or runs independently.

  4. 04

    Turnkey Build

One team carries the project through construction and final walkthrough — foundation, framing, finishes, and fixtures, with a single point of contact throughout.

Thinking it through? Start with our ADU guide.

What to consider before you build — unit types, the process step by step, and the questions worth asking early.

Good to know

ADU questions, answered.

It depends on the type and the site. A garage conversion or junior ADU sits at the lower end; a fully custom detached unit is a larger investment. Site conditions — utilities, access, grading — matter as much as square footage, so we scope every project individually. The estimate is free and based on your actual property, not a generic number.

A detached ADU is a standalone home elsewhere on your lot. An attached ADU is connected to or converted within your existing home — garage conversions included. A JADU (junior ADU) is a smaller unit created within the existing footprint of the house. Each comes with different size and code considerations, and we’ll recommend the best fit for your lot and goals.

Yes. ADU rules at the state and city level continue to evolve, so we never design from assumptions. As part of the design phase we help you navigate the current San Diego requirements for your specific lot — setbacks, utilities, and approvals — so the plan that gets drawn is one that can get built.

Design and approvals typically take a few months before construction begins, and the build itself runs several more depending on the type and complexity of the unit. We map out a realistic schedule during planning and keep you updated at every step.

Yes — and we think it should. We design exteriors, rooflines, and finishes that echo the main home and respect the yard around it, so the ADU reads as an intentional part of the property, adding to curb appeal rather than competing with it.
